One of the last unspoilt coastal zones in Europe is the Natural Park Ria Formosa which was established as a ‘Nature Reserve’ with UNESCO protected status nearly 30 years ago. It is actually a lagoon system with long barrier islands located a few hundred metres of the actual coast. The beaches of these islands are unspoilt, sandy and simply beautiful.
We mainly go to 2 different spots, depending on our mood and needs. If we want to be on our own we take one of the little boats in Fuzeta which brings us to one of the deserted islands close by. At Homém Nu Beach you experience a real Robinson Crusoe Feeling! Only your family, some water birds and miles of sandy beaches with pretty shells to collect and crystal clear water to swim. No people, no restaurants, no noise...
Our other favorite beach is Praia do Barril on the Ilha de Tavira close to the village of Pedras D’el Rei. It is very easy accessible and here you´ll find everything you need for a comfortable day at the beach. Barril beach was once a small tuna fishing community and its fishing houses have been converted into really nice restaurants, cafes and shops. (There are also clean bathrooms, showers and changing tables.) The island is connected with the mainland by a little bridge and a miniature railway that was once used by the fishing fleet and now brings visitors to the beach (for 1€) - a very pleasant ride.
One of the old fishing houses has been beautilfully renovated and now hosts the Restaurante Museo do Atum. They serve delicious lunch and have an interesting display of the history of tuna fishing. One of our favorite lunch spots!
So you can either choose the secludedness of the deserted islands close to Fuzeta or the convenience of Praia do Baril with it´s well managed and styled restaurants and cafés - both offer miles of beautiful sandy beaches and crystal clear water.
